A Kurdish official in northeastern Syria has appealed to the US-led international coalition to help control fires that are devouring vital wheat fields in the region, AFP reported.

"The fires today devoured hundreds of hectares of wheat in Al-Qahtaniyah," said Salman Baroudo, head of the self-governing body of economy and agriculture. "We are asking the international coalition to intervene to extinguish the fires by private aircraft."

The Kurdish official warned that what is happening "poses a great danger to the region, because the fire is approaching wells and oil stations."

According to media sources, the smoke was rising from the fields charred, while men were seeking to stop extending the tongues of fire using firefighters and shovels, a few meters from an oil excavator.
