The US Treasury Department on Tuesday imposed sanctions on 16 individuals and entities linked to the Syrian regime.
A statement issued by the ministry said the new sanctions included three individuals and 13 entities registered in Lattakia, Damascus, Dubai, Beirut and Homs.
The statement did not give details of the nature of the sanctions or the reasons for the inclusion of these individuals and entities.
But the Wall Street Journal said the reason was to provide financial support to the Syrian regime.
Among the figures covered by the sanctions, businessman Samer Al-Foz, who is believed to be among the most prominent financiers of the regime, according to the newspaper.
Samer Al-Foz is the Chairman and General Manager of Aman Holding, formerly known as Aman Group, and owns more than a dozen companies, all of which invest for Samer Al-Foz in reconstruction projects. He also owns Lebanon-based Lebanese television channel Lana, To invest in Syria by broadcasting commercials for the city of Marotta.
