The Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmaz announced today, Thursday, the actual start of implementing the maritime protocol with Libya.
In statements to the press, Donmaz stressed the start of an exploration of the maritime border region shared with Libya, explaining that with the end of that process, the process of exploration for natural resources in the region will begin.
Turkey and the Prime Minister of Al-Wefaq Government, Fayez al-Sarraj, refer to an agreement at the end of November 2019 to delineate maritime borders in the Mediterranean, and they signed a memorandum of understanding on security and military cooperation.
This signing of the agreement sparked strong opposition and criticism from it by several countries, especially Greece, Cyprus and Egypt, whose relations with Turkey are witnessing great tension against the backdrop of several issues. The three countries then issued a joint statement in which they considered that the signing of this memorandum of understanding was a measure that had "no legal effect".
